The Dominican Republic covers the eastern two-thirds of the island of
Hispaniola which it shares with Haiti. The capital city is Santo Domingo,
located on the south coast of the island. English is widely spoken in
major cities and tourist areas.
The Island has greatly diverse geography, ranging from semi-desert plains
to verdant valleys of tropical rain forests and magnificent golden sand
beaches along its coastline. The residue of the fiery forces that created
the island thousands of years ago, as part of the Caribbean Ring of Fire,
bellows in several hot springs, valleys of steaming earth, and a boiling
lake which is the second largest in the world.
The island enjoys a year-round tropical maritime climate, with temperatures
ranging from 23ºC to 32ºC, making it an ideal tourist destination.
It is steeped in history and culture, having the oldest city of the New
World, Santo Domingo, with abundant historical sites and it is also known
as the entry point to the Americas by Christopher Columbus.
